My partner and I are visiting Paris for the first time in about two months and I've been going down a rabbit hole trying to figure out what to actually bring back. I know French pharmacy products have a big reputation but I don't know which ones are worth it and which are just hype. Same with the food, I keep seeing people mention things like salted butter caramels, specific chocolate brands, and certain biscuits but I can't figure out what's genuinely special versus what I could just order on Amazon. For those of you who travel there regularly, what's on your actual list every single time? What would you tell a first-timer not to leave without?

Thank you in advance for the recommendations!

Food and drink

  • Valrhona or Michel Cluizel chocolate, both are the real deal and noticeably better than anything you'll find abroad
  • Salted butter caramels from Brittany, specifically the Maison Quimper tins if you spot them
  • Bordier butter, especially the seaweed one. Sounds odd, tastes extraordinary
  • A jar of Maille mustard from their actual boutique on Place de la Madeleine where they fill it fresh from a tap
  • Speculoos and Petit Écolier biscuits, cheap, widely available, and genuinely better bought there

Pharmacy

  • Caudalie, La Roche-Posay, and Avène are all cheaper in French pharmacies than anywhere else
  • Embryolisse cream is the one everyone eventually discovers and wishes they'd bought more of
  • Bioderma micellar water, same product, half the price

Misc

  • A simple linen tea towel from any home goods shop, practical and very Parisian
  • Diptyque or Maison Margiela candle if your budget allows, they're luxury items but meaningfully cheaper bought there

Skip the airport for most of this. A Monoprix supermarket covers the food and biscuits easily, and any green cross pharmacy handles the skincare. Have a wonderful trip 😀
